On behalf of the National Government of the Red River Métis, I applaud all new and returning Local executive members for their dedication and commitment to running for an elected position. Having representation for the needs and interests of Citizens at the Local level is one of the foundations of our governance structure, along with our Cabinet and President. When you join us at our assemblies, you represent not only your members but also our ancestors who first stood in open-air assemblies to defend our rights before the West joined Canada’s confederation.
After the reign of terror perpetrated against our Ancestors and before the formation of the Manitoba Métis Federation in 1967, there were still Locals scattered across Manitoba. The determination to be visible and heard by these patriots was the only remaining structure ensuring we would not be forgotten. This persistence of Locals during the dark times is one of the reasons we formed our federation, which has allowed us to achieve so much.
As the Minister for Constitution, Rights and Governance, I am pleased to offer you this guidebook to help with the continued growth and success of your Local. Please provide feedback on this document and treat it as a living support for all you hope to accomplish.
For our long-serving Local executive teams, I thank you for everything you do to keep our Nation strong and united. For new members, I hope and trust that you will find the experience happy and rewarding. I wish you well in all your endeavours and activities within your local area. I also look forward to seeing you at our assemblies, representing the people who chose you for your leadership and patriotism.
